Braking
Power:
OEM or High Performance?
Your brake needs
depend on many different factors. |
Do you have: |
 | Larger than stock
tires and wheels? |
 | Extra accessories
(custom bumpers,
winch etc.) |
 | A trailer or
camper you tow. |
 | Heavy loads to
hall. |
|
Adding any or all of
these can quickly raise the weight of your rig and
over tax stock brakes.
The larger tires and wheels will weigh more. Also
the taller tire you have the more rotational
inertia there is (i.e. they want to stay rolling).
Winches, bumpers or any accessories you've added
will increase your stopping distance. Towing places
great demands on the braking system of your
vehicle.Making
upgrades to your braking system can easily be
accomplished by most shade tree mechanics.
You can add components in sets ex: brake pads or
disc rotors just make sure you always replace in
sets to ensure even braking. While doing this it's a
good time to have a look at your whole braking
system. Look for rusted or crushed brake lines, also
check the flexible rubber lines for deterioration
and replace if they show signs of cracking. |
Upgrades you can easily do yourself. |
